"happening now" starts right now. jon: a fox news alert. breaking news now on the deadly terror attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. fox news sources telling us cia officers on the ground in benghazi during the attack sent requests for help but were denied. national security correspondent jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon with more on this. jennifer. >> reporter: hi, jon. well sources who were on the ground in benghazi during the attack tell fox news that in fact there were three separate requests to aid not only the attack that was occurring at the consulate and to try to help with that attack but also requests for outside help, outside military help to help once there were gunfire and firefights at the cia annex. those requests, we're told, came from higher headquarters. they were told to stand down. as you know, glen doherty and tyrone woods, the former navy seals were over at the cia annex at about 9:40 p.m. when the first shots were heard at the consulate where the ambassador and his team were taking fire. i'm told that they radioed to their higher headquart

: hi, jon. thank you to c-span. we talk tough. during the bush administration, we talked about the axis of evil, iraq, iran, and north korea. about benghazi -- i watched the hearings all the way through. the two security people kept talking about more security, they ask for more security. mr. nordstrom was asked if more security would have stopped this attack and his answer was no. guest: so what is the question? host: that is all we heard from her. guest: it raises the complexity of the situation in syria. more security would not necessarily have stopped the attacke. the other issue is what the president should have known and when and whether this intelligence should have landed at the doorstep of the white house or not. these kind of request to not normally make it up to the white house. the white house cannot be dealing with every security request for merit local american outpost around the world. the president and vice president have more important work to do. to lay them at the foot of the president is not necessarily fair. it raises the level of presidential attention. president o

:26. good morning, everybody. i'm jon kelley. a memorial service being held today in san francisco for chris stevens. he is the u.s. ambassador to libya who died during a violent terrorist attack just last month. stevens grou up in the east bay and graduated from uc berkeley and uc hastings college of the law in san francisco. he died september 11th when a terrorist group attacked the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. today's memorial service will be held in the rotunda of the san francisco city hall. that will start at 4:30 this afternoon. several state and national dignitaries will be attending, including thomas pickering, a former ambassador, chosen by hillary clinton to review security arrangements in libya. now, some political experts say this is a strategic move by the obama administration, since pickering is conducting the v , investigation, he will not be able to comment on the issue. we'll have continuing coverage as well as a live stream on our website, nbcbayarea.com. that service is set to start this afternoon at 4:30. >>> right now let's get a look at your tuesday forecast and

that isn't really politically attuned. maybe even more so than going on the daily show with jon stewart, which is much more politically oriented. so the idea is in a more relaxed atmosphere, have some likability. obama is really good at some comic timing, really good at comic timing. that certainly plays into it, and what is unusual about tonight's appearance is that i'm sure obama will be, so to speak, trying to close the deal. so i think that there's some opportunity for obama to actually capture some viewers that may have not even tuned into the debates. >> we know that a lot of these undecided voters have not been paying close attention. mitt romney has not appeared on a late night show since winning the nomination. he was on kelly and meekal with his wife online. he talked about not wanting to go on "saturday night live" in the secretly recorded remarks where he said the 47%. why do you think he has such a different strategy? >> well, first of all, i don't think romney is as good as obama on comic timing. the other thing is, you know, there's been a lot of gaffes from the romney ca
